My cubs and lion cubs

I have been hearing about Thaba ya Batswana a lot recently, but when I saw Tanya's post abut visiting there last weekend, I was spurred into action. It's right down the road from Sean's work, and it's got a lion cub sanctuary of sorts. The kids can actually go inside and touch baby lions. So on Saturday we headed out for a family adventure.

It was lovely. Touching a wild animal like that is a strange feeling. The kids were clearly also awed and fascinated.

The lion-meeting part is over quite quickly so afterwards we headed to the restaurant for lunch, and what a pleasure that was! Just to receive friendly service is great (it doesn't happen often). We were early for the buffet lunch, which was just being set up, but Richie was tired and cranky and needed to eat so the waitress brought him two slices of toast and pots of jam, and Felix a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich, chop-chop.

Eventually we also needed to eat and duck so they let us order basics off the menu instead of waiting for the buffet (we will return another time for that though), and when the bill came, we were surprised to find there was no charge for anything the kids ate at all. The waitress had basically just hijacked the tail end of the breakfast buffet for them and made a plan for us. How sweet?

But the feeing we had driving home was one of having had an adventure, sure, but also one of having been right out of the city and in the bush (and it's really only half an hour or one Cars Movie CD's drive south), and done a kid-friendly thing (the restaurant has a play area), and eaten decent food, and all of this was achieved not at the Spur! Which gave us a lovely sense of life returning in some way to us. Of children's treats converging sometimes with adults' treats.

Loving this age with our boys!

  2. I don't leave a leave a response, but I browsed some comments here "My cubs and lion cubs". I actually do have 2 questions for you if it's allright.

Is it just me or does it give the impression like some of the remarks come across as if they are left by brain dead visitors?
